Kroger

Kroger is one of the main stores covered (and loved) here on Nickels-n-Dimes.  Their great sales, coupons, promotions and overall great customer service put them at the tops.  Let’s review some of the specifics of this store and make sure you are ready to save your hard earned nickels-n-dimes!

  • KROGER PLUS CARD:  Let’s start this with their store card…  If you don’t have one (PLEASE DON’T TELL ME!).  I can’t bear the thought.  Instead, fix that and get one – NOW.  This is your first defense to fighting higher prices at Kroger.  Please note that you do not need to carry this card with you.  You can use your telephone number at check out.
  • DOUBLE MANUFACTURER COUPONS: Kroger offers unlimited double coupons.  This means that if you have five (5) of the same coupon, they will double all five (5).  With this said, each store reserves the right to limit coupons.  You will find this mostly during their Mega Event sales as this seems to be the worst time for people to clear the shelves and this makes for quite a mess on the store end therefore, limits may be put in place.
  • STORE COUPONS:  Kroger offers store coupons.  By registering your Kroger Plus Card and making sure your address is up to date, you can ensure these coupons will make their way to your mailbox.  They will arrive via booklets and perforated coupon sheets.  These sheets are based on your purchases while the booklets are based on the time of year, recipes, etc.  Store coupons do not double.
    • You can register HERE or by calling 1-866-221-4141.
    • Note: just because it comes from Kroger does not mean it’s a store coupon.  Always check the coupon to determine if it’s a store or manufacturer coupon.
  • PRINTABLE COUPONS:  Kroger accepts printable coupons.  (Please note these following printable tips are not Kroger specific).  Print your coupons from reliable sources.  For a list of reliable printable coupon site, please GO HERE.  Do not (ever) use coupons that pull up in MS Word or a similar program.  Stores do not put out coupons in this manner.  CENTS OFF is a great resource and HERE you will find a list of coupons that have been discovered as fraudulent.  If you suspect a coupon but it’s not listed, know that it simply may not be added yet.  Follow your gut instinct!
  • ELECTRONIC COUPONS:  Kroger accepts electronic coupons that can be added to your Kroger card.  By simply creating accounts, you can select the coupons you’d like to add and hit the add button.  Within 20-60 minutes, they are active and ready for use.  These are great coupons even for those that don’t like to “coupon” (I know….shudder the thought!).  You can keep up with the various electronic coupon sites HERE.  Please note that these are a one time only type of coupon.  If they reset, you can read, but otherwise, know that you can only place it on your card once.  The only way to remove these coupons once added is to use them or wait for them to expire.   Electronic coupons do not double.  These cannot be stacked with (paper) maunfacturer coupons.
  • RAINCHECKS:  Kroger offers rainchecks when items are out of stock (unless otherwise indicated).  Get these as they are your way to making sure you get your products and your savings!  This also buys you time to gather more coupons.  Kroger rainchecks can be obtained at the customer service desk and are valid for one month from the date of issue.
  • OTHER STORE’S COUPONS:  Kroger does not accept competitor coupons.
  • PROMOTIONS:  Kroger is known for their AWESOME Mega Events.  During these sales, you can expect to get a certain dollar amount off your order when you purchase the specified number of items.  For example, they may say, Get $5 off when you buy 10 participating items.  This equates to $0.50 off per item and coupons can be / and of course should be matched to this sale.  When shopping these sales, you can mix and match your way to savings.  Kroger also hosts 10 for $10 sales.  An important note on these sales is to know that you do not have to purchase 10 of a certain item.  You can purchase just 1 and get it for $1!
  • MARK DOWNS:  Kroger stores tend to mark down their donuts in the bakery section each evening.  They have a marked down meat area and most stores (especially Marketplace stores) have an area of marked down household items and decor (LOVE this area)!
  • GAS REWARDS:  By having the Kroger Plus Card, you can earn gas rewards.  You can redeem these for up to $1.00 off at a Kroger gas station or $0.10 off at any Shell station.  You can earn $0.10 off per gallon each time you:
    • Spend $100.
    • Purchase $50 in gift cards.
    • Get two new or transferred prescriptions at the pharmacy.
    • For more details on this program, GO HERE.
  • REUSABLE BAGS:  Kroger offers $0.03 off per reusable bag you bring along!!  Not only can you get more in each bag, but they offer additional savings!  Please note your bags can be from any store and of any style.  They do not have to be Kroger purchased bags.

I have a question. The little coupons that print at the register at stores like meijer and kroger usually say manufacturer’s coupons. But they also say redeem at *insert store name*. If I had one from Meijer or somewhere, could I use it somewhere else? Or would that be considered a competitor’s coupon?

I have been told many of times it is a competitor’s coupon even though it says it is a manufacturer’s coupon because it has to be redeemed to that store. However, meijer accepts competitor’s coupons. I just used a Target coupon and my register rewards from Walgreens there the other day.

Renee, you are right. If it shows a store logo, it needs to be redeemed at that store. This changes though when talking about Meijer as they absolutely do accept competitor coupons.

I do have no note though that I am shocked about the RR being accepted. WOW!

I had a manufacturer’s coupon with a Walgreens logo on it. I asked the woman at the desk at Kroger’s if I could use it, and she said they were just told that as long as it scans, they’ll take it. YAY! Who knows if all Kroger employees received this information yet, but it worked for me.

I just want to make sure I understand: Kroger digital coupons cannot be stacked with paper mfr coupons? I just bought several items today, expecting store coupons (digital) to come off the total along with my paper coupons, but they didn’t. (It’s ok because I wasn’t sure & I made a point to only buy those items that were a good deal even without the digital coupons.) However, on several items Shortcuts & Cellfire electronic coupons were applied, even though I also used paper mfr coupons on those same items.
