Cocoa Krispie Treat Nests

This morning I woke up and decided I would make a fun treat to take with us when we headed out to visit friends.  I sent my hubby to the store to pick up the necessary ingredients and he was very willing to go…especially with the enticement of a sweet treat!

Once I told the girls what I was making they both wanted to help.

Here’s what we used to whip up our nests:

5 tablespoons butter or margarine (I prefer butter, but we had some margarine in our fridge so I used that today)

6-7 cups mini marshmallows (My girls really like marshmallows so we used 7 cups.  You’ll need 2 bags for this.)

9 cups Cocoa Krispies Cereal

1 bag Easter Colored Egg Shaped Peanut Butter M&Ms (You could use any egg-shaped candy)

2 packages of Marshmallow Peeps chicks (For some reason, my chicks today were a little misshapen)

You can do all of this over the stove using a large pan which is what I would normally do, but since I was in a hurry, I used the microwave (and I really should have used a bigger bowl).

1.  Melt butter and marshmallows in the microwave, stirring every 30 seconds.

2.  Once your marshmallows are a gooey and creamy consistency, stir in your Cocoa Krispies.  Mix them up til they are well coated.

3.  Spoon mixture into greased cupcake or muffin tins and fill til almost full.

4.  Using your thumb, press down in the middle of each treat to form the shape of a nest.

{If you only have one muffin tin like I do, you can also freeform nests on a greased cookie sheet.  You will most likely need to grease your hands to form the nests.}

5.  Allow your nests to set for 30 minutes to an hour.  Once nests are set, remove from cookie tin and place in muffin or cupcake wrappers. {If you hand shaped your nests, they most likely will not fit in the cupacke liners.}

6.  Add 2 eggs (Peanut Butter M&Ms) to each nest.

7.  Place a chick on the top of the eggs and the nest and VOILA!  You have a fabulous and fun treat that delights kids and grown-ups alike!

My girls have already requested that we make these again on Easter weekend.  Let me know if you try them and love them as much as my family does!
